The sale of Pharmaceutical products is subject to various degrees of regulation. Medications used for treating conditions that necessitate medical diagnosis, such as antihypertensives, antibiotics, and sleeping pills, are typically classified as prescription drugs. Conversely, medications with minimal risk of severe side effects or used for alleviating minor ailments—such as common cold remedies, antipyretics, and certain analgesics—may be sold directly without a prescription. Please consult our pharmacists for further information.
Additionally, the purchase of personal care products does not require a doctor’s prescription. You are advised to make a stock inquiry before visiting our pharmacy.

We regret to inform you that we are unable to accept unused medications. Currently, Hong Kong lacks a comprehensive system for the disposal of household pharmaceuticals, and medical institutions do not offer widespread collection services. However, before discarding medications into the waste bin, you can follow several precautionary steps to safeguard public health:
1️⃣ Prepare a sealed plastic bag to collect the expired or unused drugs.
2️⃣Remove all blister packs, aluminum foil wrappers, and pour out any liquid medications. Destroy or deface the external packaging to render the drugs unrecognizable, then place them into the bag.
3️⃣ Discard used tea leaves, coffee grounds, or other waste alongside the medications into the bag, seal it securely before disposal.
By destroying the packaging and altering the appearance of the medications prior to disposal, you help prevent accidental ingestion by others and reduce the risk of deliberate reuse.

According to Hong Kong Ordinance Chapter 138, the Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance, medications are primarily classified into three categories: prescription drugs, monitored sale drugs, and over-the-counter medicines.
Examples of prescription drugs include antihypertensives, diabetes medications, cholesterol-lowering agents, and antibiotics. Such medications must be dispensed under the supervision of a registered pharmacist in a licensed pharmacy, strictly following a doctor’s prescription. The packaging of prescription drugs is marked with the words “Prescription Drug” to indicate their status.
According to the Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance, prescriptions must be issued by registered doctors, registered dentists, or registered veterinarians. Prescriptions issued by registered dentists should include the notation “For Dental Use Only,” while those from registered veterinarians should specify “For Veterinary Use Only.” Other essential details on a valid prescription include:
- The date of issuance
- The patient’s full name and address
- The total quantity of medication prescribed, along with the dosing or usage instructions
- The signature of the prescriber
- The address of the prescriber
Regarding the drug name, if the doctor specifies a particular brand on the prescription, the registered pharmacist must dispense the specified medication and not substitute it with a generic equivalent (as detailed below).
To prescribe a generic drug, the doctor should:
Write only the chemical name of the medication on the prescription, avoiding any mention of brand names or manufacturers. For example, for the cholesterol medication Lipitor, whose active ingredient is Atorvastatin, writing “Atorvastatin” allows for substitution with a generic version.
Alternatively, include phrases such as “Generic drug is allowed” or “Generic okay,” indicating that a generic substitute is permitted.
Yes. In accordance with Hong Kong legislation, individuals seeking to purchase prescription medications are required to present an original, valid prescription issued by a registered medical practitioner, registered dentist, or registered veterinarian. Patients may obtain their medication either personally or through a companion by bringing the original prescription to Health In Action Community Pharmacy.
Legislation mandates that pharmacies retain the original prescription and maintain relevant records for a period of 2 years following the dispensing of medication based on the doctor’s prescription. The onsite pharmacist is required to preserve these dispensing records for inspection purposes.
No.
No.
No. A valid, original prescription issued by a licensed medical practitioner must be presented at the time of dispensing medication.
No, it is not permissible. A valid prescription must be issued by a doctor, dentist, or veterinarian registered in Hong Kong.
It is not permitted. Dispensing prescription medication must be accompanied by a valid doctor’s prescription in accordance with the prescribed quantities.
Yes, it is permissible. Our pharmacy will take possession of the original prescription, and the remaining medication will be recorded on a medication record card. Simply bringing the record card will be sufficient to dispense the remaining quantity. Should the remaining amount be exhausted, a new consultation and an updated prescription will be required to obtain the next dispensation.
Typically, doctors indicate the total prescribed quantity and the date on the prescription, and patients are advised to collect their medications from community pharmacies in a timely manner. Additionally, prescriptions issued by hospitals under the Hospital Authority are generally valid for a period of one month from the date of issuance.
In general, depending on your specific situation, pharmacists could fill an expired prescription based on their professional judgement. However, we could only dispense enough medication to cover the period from the dispensing date until your next scheduled appointment. We cannot provide the full amount originally prescribed.
When a drug’s patent expires, other manufacturers can produce medications containing the same active ingredient. Generic medications are typically more affordable, helping to reduce patients’ financial burden.
Generic medications contain the same active ingredient as branded drugs and theoretically are equally effective. However, their excipients such as fillers, colorants, or coatings may differ, which is why generic pills may vary in color, size, or packaging from the original brand. While some individuals may experience adverse reactions to these different excipients, such cases are rare, as research found that common excipient ingredients are not likely to cause allergy. Furthermore, for patients taking a particular drug for the first time, the likelihood of allergy to excipients is theoretically similar whether taking the brand-name or generic version.
All generic medications are registered with the Department of Health with a Hong Kong registration number (e.g., HK-XXXXX) on their packaging. You can verify this information on the Department of Health website (https://www.drugoffice.gov.hk/eps/do/tc/consumer/search_drug_database2.html)
Example:
Brand Name: Crestor® (冠脂妥)
Generic Name: Rosuvastatin
If the doctor specifies a particular brand of medication on the prescription (e.g., “Lipitor 10mg”), pharmacists must dispense that exact brand by law. Generic alternatives cannot be substituted.
If you wish to purchase generic medications, please ask your doctor to either prescribe using the drug’s generic name only (without specifying the brand) or to include the statement “generic substitution is allowed” on the prescription.
Example:
“Lipitor” is the brand name; the generic name (active ingredient) of the medication is “Atorvastatin”.
- If the doctor writes “Lipitor 10mg” on the prescription, the patient can get the branded “Lipitor” with the prescription.
- If the doctor writes “Atorvastatin 10mg” on the prescription, the patient can choose Atorvastatin produced by different manufacturers with the prescription, i.e., generic drugs can be used.
- If the prescription includes the statement “Generic substitution is allowed” it means generic drugs can be used.
